I know a fireman shouldn’t say stuff like this, but I’m almost aching for there to be another disaster in town. One where nobody gets hurt of course, but something to keep my mind off of her.

Lucy. The girl of my dreams.

I’ve done nothing but think about her for the last few days, and I’ve been this close to driving over to her place about a hundred times, dreams of sweeping her into my arms, throwing her down onto her bed and ravaging her sweet, innocent body. But she made it pretty clear how she feels about me, and so far, I don’t know how to change her mind about that.

No doubt she’s heard about my reputation around town. Tiffany definitely said some shit at the hospital, and the other nurses probably gossiped—no, definitely gossiped, and now Lucy thinks I’m some love-‘em-and-leave-‘em douchebag who’s incapable of love. In fact, I’d go get down on my hands and knees right now and propose to her if I thought that wouldn’t have the complete opposite effect.

For some reason, Lucy is scared. I don’t know why, but I have the feeling it’s something more than just the fact that I am known around town as a ladies’ man. I need to know why so I can convince her that we’re meant to be together. At first I was just obsessed—enraptured by her beauty, charm and other-worldly sex appeal—but now I’m smitten by her, and the more time I spend away from her, the more those feelings inside me grow.

The boys have invited me out for beers at Chrissy’s, but my heart’s just not in it. They all know about Lucy by now, and I don’t feel like explaining the situation to them any more.

I’m turning off Main Street when I see it Lucy’s car a few blocks ahead of me heading over toward the old Navy base. I know exactly where she’s headed too. Once the military moved out, they left a ton of buildings vacant, some of which have been repurposed into small businesses, restaurants and even classrooms for the local community college, but others have been turned into office space. Seeing as how Lucy’s building is now a pile of ash, she’s definitely headed there to find a new location.

And I can help her out.

Grinning like a high schooler, I follow as she takes the turn I was expecting and heads past a couple of the big airplane hangers and parks beside a beige building. Sure enough, Clint is there waiting for her.

Clint’s a local developer in town. He’s a bit of a shark, but a nice guy once you get to know him. If you’re on his good side, he’s a great friend, but if you cross him, he’ll bite your legs off. Luckily for me (and Lucy), I was the first on the scene when his daughter crashed the new car he bought her for graduation, so I’m on the top of his bff list.

I park across the lot and watch as Lucy, looking like a million bucks, gets out of her car and walks over to him.
